Alpha Readers

The earliest readers. The roughest drafts. The most direct questions about whether any of this is working.

Alpha reading is not a program you apply for. It is an ongoing conversation between an author and a small number of trusted people who have agreed to read work in progress—sometimes chapter by chapter, sometimes in messy incomplete drafts, always before the manuscript is close to finished.

Alpha readers are usually people the author knows personally: writers, close friends, people who have demonstrated over time that they can read unfinished work honestly and generously at the same time.

This page exists because people ask. The honest answer is that alpha reading is not open to the general public, and that is not going to change. The work that gets shared at this stage is unformed enough that wider circulation would do more harm than good—to the writing and to the people reading it.
