The witness was not supposed to be there. That was the first thing Marguerite understood as the man entered the chamber — not his name, not his testimony, not the letter he carried sealed with a bishop’s wax. Only that his presence undid three years of careful preparation the way a pulled thread undoes a hem.
The examiner set down his pen. The notary set down his pen. Two Franciscan observers in the corner exchanged a look that contained an entire conversation.
